What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships vary, but the basic idea is a student will spend a few years learning a trade in both a classroom and on a job site. Students are taught by master craftsmen in their field of study. Through this learning, a student’s pay slowly increases along with their experience and abilities. This a great option for students who are not interested in a formal college education, and would like to learn a trade through hands on work.

Registered Apprenticeship

Registered Apprenticeship is a training system that combines job related instruction and on the job learning. Apprentices start working on day one and see an incremental increase in wages as they become more proficient. On average, an apprenticeship is 4 years, but some may last 2 or 6 years.

Once this program is completed, participants receive an industry issued, nationally recognized credential that certifies occupational proficiency. In many cases, these programs also provide apprentices the opportunity to simultaneously obtain secondary and post-secondary degrees. The Office of Apprenticeship (OA) works in conjunction with State agencies to administer the program nationally. This ensures the program meets Federal and State standards, protects the welfare of apprentices, and issues nationally recognized certificates of completion.

Requirements

Registered Apprenticeship programs sponsors identify minimum qualifications to apply into their program. The starting age can be no younger than 16 years of age. Individuals need to be 18 if it is a potentially hazardous occupation. Other qualifications may include certain education requirements, physical abilities to perform certain functions of the occupation, and proof of age. Additional standards such as aptitude tests, school grades, interviews, and previous work experience may also be looked at.
