The preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test provides prep for the SAT and is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship and the National Achievement Scholarship. This test offers comprehensive reports and insight into a student’s college readiness, helps identify students for AP courses, and provides career and college planning tools. It is given once a year in October.  Students should take the exam October of their junior year. Some schools offer this opportunity to sophomores. The test includes reading, math, and writing skills sections.

SAT Subject Tests

These tests measures students’ knowledge and skills in particular subject areas and their ability to apply that knowledge. There are 20 Subject Tests covering 16 core subjects in five areas of history, English, math, the sciences, and languages. Dates of the subject tests can be found at www.collegeboard.org/subjecttests. Some colleges require one or more Subject Tests. Students should take the tests as near as possible to the completion of their high school studies in a given subject.

   The SAT
