The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a comprehensive assessment tool administered by the Department of Defense assessing whether Military candidates possess aptitudes, specific skills, and knowledge needed to enlist and qualify for certain military occupations. The armed services do not offer open admissions to anyone who is interested in joining. The ASVAB is how applicants may qualify to enlist if they score high enough. The military recommends a solid core of mathematics,English, and science.

The ASVAB is also used to determine who receives enlistment bonuses, who has the potential to be trained for higher level responsibilities, and who qualifies for college repayment options. Not everyone receives these incentives.
